Fairyhand

THE BUSHES PARTED. It was Sarah Wiltshire, her dog, and the Ruby Man. I picked up the bag and bolted.

“Don’t run!” cried Sarah. “We’re your friends, we want to help you!”

I dashed through the trees, with the growing sense the end was just around the corner. The dog barked. Why, oh why, had I lit that fire? How could I have been so excited, so hopeful? No, it wasn’t to be – it was all over.

Sarah’s hot breath was on the back of my neck, and I knew running was pointless. She seized me by the wrist – I’d forgotten how strong she was – and before I knew it, she grabbed my arms and turned me to face her.

“There’s no need to be afraid – we’re not from the Predators. We’re not going to harm you. Where are the Seekers? Why are you all alone?”

“What d’you mean? Let go of me!”

Sarah was wearing the same white overcoat, and the ruby was now hanging around her neck. She frowned and looked me in the eyes, then nodded at the man. “This is Johnny Randall, my companion.” She continued to gaze at me, while Johnny put on a scowl.

“He tried to kill me!” I pointed my finger at him. “It was him! He tried to kill me on the road!”

Sarah looked puzzled. “What? They must have tracked you down too. Jennifer, it wasn’t him. It must have been the Predators.”

“But it was! It was him! He made my dad’s car crash and then he chased me with a knife! And he broke into my house!”

“He had to get the ruby back,” said Sarah. “I’m sorry if he frightened you…”

“But how did he get in? He must have used magic…”

Sarah nodded. “The sorcerer’s spell doesn’t reach the human world. We can still use magic there.”

“But the car! He was going to kill us!”

Sarah glanced at Johnny, then shook her head. “Jennifer, tell us how you got here. Where are the other Seekers? Please trust me, it’s important.”

“I don’t know what you mean. I came here with a dwarf, and my sister and cousin. But some goblins and the sorcerer’s men captured us. I was questioned by a man called Vices, who…”

“Vices!” Sarah took her arms off my shoulders and glanced at Johnny, who deepened his scowl. “So he’s leader now,” she said. “Go on.”

“I escaped using a spell Darmus told me and I ran off by stealing the horse.”

“Who is Darmus?”

“The leader of the dwarfs in Selka.”

“The forest Selka?”

“Yeah.”

“Thank goodness they found you.” Sarah whispered something to Johnny, then turned back to me. “You do know you are a fairyhand don’t you. Did they tell you that much?”

“No, they just told me I could do magic but everyone else couldn’t. But the goblins kept on calling me that. And so did that man.”

“Vices?”

I nodded.

“So you have no idea what it means?”

I shook my head. Sarah passed her fingers through her hair and fixed her eyes into mine.

“It means you’re part fairy, Jennifer. Of human father and fairy mother.
